Standard sizes of bed linen - Austria vs. Germany

If there's one thing that can really be annoying in bed, it's ill-fitting bed linen.
The reason for this may simply be that the wrong size was purchased, as there are actually country-specific differences in the standard sizes of bed linen in Austria and Germany.

To prevent such a mishap, you will find all information about the most important differences in this blog post.

LET'S START WITH THE CLASSIC AUSTRIAN BED LINEN SIZES:

Here, most duvets have a size of 140x200 cm and pillows 70x90 cm.

Therefore, these dimensions are considered standard when buying bed linen. Of course, there are exceptions here, as everywhere, and in many Austrian households, you can find duvets with the standard width of 140 cm but the comfort length of 220 cm. That's an extra 20 cm for guaranteed warm feet.

For those who like to roll up particularly tightly in their duvet, want more space to cuddle with their loved ones, or want to enjoy extra rolled-up duvet as support for side sleepers, duvets are available in sizes 200x200 cm or 200x220 cm.

There are also exceptions for pillow sizes! Especially since health pillows are becoming more common in households. Specifically, there are countless formats and functions here. From classic neck support pillows with dimensions 60x35x14 and a comfort hollow, to so-called foam pillows that "remember" the ideal sleeping position, to classic support pillows. For many health pillows, you can also use pillowcases with the German standard size 40x80 cm.

WHAT ABOUT OUR NEIGHBOURING COUNTRY GERMANY?

Since we are very happy to offer our bed linen to our German customers as well, we will use this as a comparison to the Austrian bed linen sizes.

In Germany, the situation is a little different, as people there prefer to snuggle up in duvets with a size of 135x200 cm and the classic pillow has a size of 80x80 cm or 40x80 cm. The German comfort size measures 155x220 cm + 80x80 cm.

Now, some of you might be wondering if 5cm more or less really matters – especially for the duvet?

We can answer that with a resounding YES! The standard sizes are largely similar, but the mentioned centimeters make a big difference: If the bed linen does not fit the duvet precisely, the duvet can easily slip inside the bed linen or form a bulge (depending on the case), which can significantly reduce comfort.

For this reason, we have the following tips to ensure that your enjoyment is not spoiled and that your bed linen arrives in the correct size:

1. Check the dimensions of the bed, duvet, and pillow before buying: Double-check the measurements before buying new bed linen, then you have your own measured guarantee that you are ordering the correct size.
